Caution: X.G.O.T.A.W.A.Y.? by Ankica Mitrovska

Caution: X.G.O.T.A.W.A.Y.? (Exclusive grounds of the angsty watchers among you)

Drawings by Ankica Mitrovksa, March 6th – April 17th, 2015

Macedonian artist, Ankica Mitrovska, has shown at museums, galleries, and universities throughout the United States including numerous exhibitions in Kansas and Alabama where she earned her M.F.A. in Painting at Wichita State University and B.A. in Studio Art and Art History at the University of Alabama. About her work, Mitrovska says,

“Influenced by German Expressionism, Surrealism, and Graffiti Art, I introduce androgynous, cartoon-like humanoid mutant characters with infused sarcasm. The multi-layered charcoal drawings of the humanoid mutants have been liberated from their origins and as paper cutouts are placed in constructed scenes… Using expressive mark making in its directness suggests not only a complexity but reveals a discontent and aggression towards coercive transformation committed by those in power. I deliberately play with ambiguity and uncertainty to imply power struggles and obtain emotional response.”

Riverviews’ exhibition Caution: X.G.O.T.A.W.A.Y.? (Exclusive grounds of the angsty watchers among you) will open on First Friday,  March 6th from 5:30 – 8:00 pm. Mitrovska will discuss her art in a public gallery talk during the opening reception. The exhibition will remain on view through April 17th.  Gallery hours are 12 – 5 pm Wednesday through Sunday or by appointment. Free and open to the public.
