B.F.A. | Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Va.
Diploma in Special Advanced Studies | Central School of Art and Design, London, England
M.F.A., Art | University of Wisconsin, Madison
Born and raised in Roanoke, Laura Pharis has been a staple of the Lynchburg arts community since the early 1990s, when she accepted a position as a fine arts instructor at Sweet Briar College. Her work, which spans drawing, painting, printmaking, etching, woodcutting and more, often focuses on symbols of the creative process itself while incorporating stories and memories from her own life.
Prior to joining Sweet Briar College in 1990, Pharis managed the Richmond Printmaking Workshop, founded One/Off Printmakers, and lead printmaking workshops in London and Ireland, and was named Virginia Artist of the Year by the Richmond Women’s Caucus for the Arts in 2000. Most recently, Pharis’ work was featured in the Riverviews 20th Anniversary Exhibition in Lynchburg, Virginia.
