Jessica Matthews ARTIST STATEMENT
“As I grow, I’m constantly reminded of how valuable it is to be aware of who and what is around me. I work with photography for its complexity, sentiment and adaptability. Photography’s ability to evoke emotion and relate to others makes it the perfect medium for me to experience and explore the diversity of humanity and the natural world around me.”
Jessica’s love for art began in high school. She dabbled in several genres of art, her strongest being digital and film photography.
She was an art “major” at The Friends School in Baltimore from 2009 to 2013. She studied in film and digital photography, video production and drawing courses. Many of her digital photos were featured on the official Friends School of Baltimore website. Her darkroom developed photographs won class awards and special recognition. Jessica self directed, shot and edited a short film titled, “Ella”, which won audience favorite award in Friends School of Baltimore Film Festival (2013).
In 2010, she became the head theatre light designer for most Friends School of Baltimore events. She was also videographer / photographer for Bridgeway Community Church student ministries events from 2011 to 2014.
Jessica has been a freelance portrait and nature photographer since 2013. She is currently pursuing a technical theatre degree with a focus in light and set design.
