BEAT BURG, April 2016

BEAT BURG is Riverviews’ annual month-long celebration of National Poetry Month. We have partnered with local poets and businesses to create a month of events and initiatives with the simple goal of having every person downtown Lynchburg, VA encounter a poem during National Poetry Month in April. Poetry matters now more than ever. Our world is saturated with text, online Twitter, and constant Facebook status updates. Words are cheap, but with poetry every word matters; poetry slows things and makes us think. Many people associate poetry with ivory towers and school; for many it seems unattainable. Through BEAT BURG Riverviews wants to surprise people with poetry and make it engaging and accessible!

Check out everything we have planned in April for BEAT BURG 2016!

Beat Poets Party – Kick off National Poetry Month with a First Friday party at Riverviews Artspace. Groove to live music by Quintana Latin and Jazz; listen to Beat poetry readings by local poets; and experience the vibrant installation Lost in Transitions by Eleen Lin. Craddock-Terry Gallery, April 1st, 5:30-8:00 pm

Poetry in Motion – Poetry will be traveling all over the city with the Greater Lynchburg Transit Company. Look for our giant BEAT BURG banners on the sides of two special GLTC buses throughout the month.

Poetry Coasters – If you are dining at a downtown restaurant, there’s a good chance your drink will arrive with some local poetry via a BEAT BURG coaster. These custom coasters feature poetry from fifteen local writers.

Downtown Building Banners – Keep a look out for poetry in windows throughout downtown Lynchburg. Nearly thirty colorful banners adorned with local poetry will be hard to miss!

Small Theatre / Big Screen – Join us for Amour Fou, a darkly humorous period piece on love, life, death, and the story of author Heinrich von Kleist. Admission is $5 at the door. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and seating is first come first served. Rosel H. Schewel Theatre, April 8th, 7:00 pm

The Listening: Authenticity – This special BEAT BURG installment of The Listening will consider what it means to be authentic and will highlight performing artists such as poets, songwriters, musicians, and dancers. Craddock-Terry Gallery, April 15th, 6:00 pm

Instagram Sightings – BEAT BURG will infiltrate downtown Lynchburg. Use social media to share your BEAT BURG sightings with the tag #rvasbeatburg. Your photos could be featured on Riverviews’ Facebook and Instagram!
