BEAT BURG is Riverviews’ month-long celebration of National Poetry Month each April.
Riverviews Artspace has created a series of events and projects with the simple goal of having every person downtown Lynchburg, VA encounter a poem during National Poetry Month in April.
Poetry matters now more than ever. Our world is saturated with text, online Twitter, and constant Facebook status updates. Words are cheap, but with poetry every word matters; poetry slows things and makes us think. Many people associate poetry with ivory towers and school; for many it seems unattainable. Through BEAT BURG Riverviews wants to surprise people with poetry and make it engaging and accessible!
Check out everything we have planned for BEAT BURG 2015!
Beat Poets Party – Kick off National Poetry Month with a First Friday party at Riverviews Artspace. Groove to live music by Quintana Latin and Jazz; listen to verses by local poets Bunny Goodjohn, Laura-Gray Street, and Gary Dop; and experience the installation Caution: X.G.O.T.A.W.A.Y.? (Exclusive grounds of the angsty watchers among you) by Ankica Mitrovska. Craddock-Terry Gallery, April 3rd, 5:30-8:00 pm Poetry in Motion – Poetry will be traveling all over the city with the Greater Lynchburg Transit Company. Look for our giant BEAT BURG banners on the sides of two special GLTC buses throughout the month.
Poetry Coasters – If you are dining at a downtown restaurant, there’s a good chance your drink will arrive with some local poetry via a BEAT BURG coaster. These custom coasters feature poetry from twenty-one local writers.
Downtown Building Banners – Keep a look out for poetry in windows up and down Main Street. The colorful banners adorned with local poetry will be hard to miss!
Small Theatre / Big Screen – Join us for Dead Poets Society starring Robin Williams in our monthly film series. Admission is $5 at the door. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and seating is first come first served. Rosel H. Schewel Theatre, April 10th, 7:00 pm
Ripe at Riverviews – Young rap artists from Lynchburg and the surrounding areas will showcase their talents during BEAT BURG 2015. Ripe at Riverviews will be hosted by Oktober9 of Rawsole Records and will feature exciting performances by eight emerging rappers. Craddock-Terry Gallery, April 16th, 7:00 pm
Instagram Sightings – BEAT BURG will infiltrate downtown Lynchburg. Use social media to share your BEAT BURG sightings with the tag #rvasbeatburg. Your photos could be featured on Riverviews’ Facebook and Instagram!
Dead Poets Party – Brush off your Walt Whitman hat and Gertrude Stein wig for the BEAT BURG Dead Poet’s Party. Evoke the spirit of Baudelaire or Behan by reciting a favorite poem (perhaps fortified by the spirits of DISH first), or simply join us as we bid adieu to BEATBURG until April 2016. DISH restaurant, April 29th, 7:00 pm
